Here at Tax Agent 99 we’re not a success story because everything went well; we’re successful because we survived the multitude of challenges that came our way and we want to help you survive those challenges too.  Not only that – we want to help you go from surviving to thriving.

JANINE GARTNER – PASSIONATE OWNER OF TAX AGENT 99 | NETWORKING QUEEN 

As many of my fellow networking tribe will know, business owner life prior to Tax Agent 99 didn’t go too well. It was probably one of the most painful episodes of my business life but the lessons I am most grateful for out of this experience are 1) discovering what it takes to make a business work 2) I genuinely treasure the relationships I have with my clients, staff and people who have supported me along this ongoing journey.
Writing a business plan is one you’ll always hear accountants or business mentors recommend doing because it gives you direction and a road map to follow. For me a real game changer was joining Venus – a national business women’s networking group. I strongly recommend anyone starting out in business to join a networking group. Find one that suits you as even though the formats might be slightly similar each group has their own vibe.
It’s just as much a personal piece of advice as much as it is business advice and that is – Don’t take life too seriously. I know that might sound contradictory from someone who has to make sure your tax and accounts are done accurately but you have to smile and enjoy the small wins as much as the big wins. Hell yes, you have to be able to laugh at yourself too. It’s key to success and success to me is making meaningful work and yes that does include tax returns but there’s so much more to us that that! We’re your confidants and mentors too and one of our biggest bonuses is we don’t judge. We know how tricky those twists and turns can be.
We’re all about relationships and in fact that’s we love the most. We’re here to promote inclusivity and build stronger communities. We know that if we help someone get through the first few years in business and they want to grow their business even by 2 or 3 staff members that means together we’re creating jobs for our fellow mums and dads and kids coming out of school or university. It really does pay to be resourceful, work hard but most of all be kind. You never, ever know what someone else is going through.
Hanging out with my husband and boy is my favourite thing in the world to do. Who doesn’t love to come home and enjoy the special moments in life with their friends or family. Time is precious.

Cherie Green – Practice Manager | Janine’s Right Hand Woman

It’s probably not a physical thing I love about my workspace but I do love to have my own space full stop. Working autonomously but having the team just down the hallway means I get the best of both worlds. I can choose peace and quiet or raucous laughter depending on how I feel!
Janine and I go way back so we just get each other. Janine loves to get out and about and meet all kinds of amazing people trying and doing amazing things in business and I like to be her right-hand woman back at basecamp so to speak. To be honest there has been times Janine has pushed me outside my comfort zone to do Xero presentations for example which isn’t naturally something I enjoy doing but afterwards you do feel a satisfying sense of achievement.
We are all Xero heroes at Tax Agent 99. We live and breathe Xero which sounds like it’s a sales pitch but it’s not. Because we use it every day in every way we know how much easier cloud accounting software makes running a business easier so why wouldn’t we love it?
My favorite motto is “How does it get any better than this?” I’m pretty down to earth. I like to keep it simple and that suits me down to the ground but there is always room for growth and other possibilities. If you were given 3 extra hours to spend each day what would you do? I would spend more time with my family, at the river getting back to nature, practice my roller skating, sign up for anything and everything!

I am an early waker, I always make sure I wake with time to lie in bed before having to get up. Its a quick peaceful time when the house is still asleep where I can gather my thoughts for the day and decide how I will tackle all my tasks. Keeping a level of calm at the beginning of the day filters through the entire household.
Mean what you say and say what you mean. Life is far too short and valuable to not be honest and true to yourself and people around you.
Definitely honesty. We build the best relationships with people in our day to day lives if there is honesty.
My workspace is warm and functional. It is a safe place when things go wrong and it is mutually jubilant when things are going well.
I would spend more time being creative and doing the things I personally enjoy. As a working mum you are often left with not many hours in the day to do things for yourself. Since I’m such an early riser I highly recommend the book The 5am Club by Robin Sharma. The tagline or catchphrase on the cover of the book is “Own your morning – Elevate your life” and from personal experience having the time and headspace first thing really helps to set you up for the day. This book contains stories,formulas and personal anecdotes that it’s one of those picks that helps take the day from good to great!
